Do you fidget when approaching the Tarrytown toll plaza, looking for dollar bills, trying to figure out which lane is cash only? Maybe you, like I, meant to get an E-ZPass® tag, and forgot to enroll online or download and print an application.

Guess what?

Pre-packaged E-ZPass® tags are now available at the Community Outreach Centers, 303 S. Broadway, Tarrytown, and 142 Main St., Nyack. Both are open Monday through Friday, from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.; Saturday and Sunday, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

They’re convenient, and would have saved me hunting for money at the last minute (unless I prepared ahead). Don’t ask how often I missed toll baskets, then stopped and looked for fallen change amid the sounds of music (horns blaring).

I’m getting one this week. It costs a small fortune to travel to the boroughs — $15 for bridge tolls without tags. This past winter we visited family in Queens, and friends in Long Island, and I wish I’d had tags then.

Each tag is $25 and will be active upon purchase, with the first $15 immediately available; the remaining $10 would be, after the tag is registered online or by phone. It’s a five percent savings on Thruway tolls, and toll discounts in 15 states:

Delaware, Illinois, Indiana, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Virginia, and West Virginia.

I’d like to know what you think.
