Structural Steel Installation for Westchester Landing Continues; Additional Lane Closures

Installment of structural steel girders for the Westchester landing in Tarrytown — to connect that westbound span’s on-land abutment to the support pier in the river — began last week. The nose girder launch mechanism seen in the video below was made by County Fabricators, LLC.

The beams are connected into a three-girder assembly on land, rolled on a track system designed for this purpose. They reach the land-based first pier and are pushed across the Hudson Line train tracks to the first in-river pier with added girders connected to the assembly and pushed west. This three-month process will include three Friday nights across the train tracks; the first is October 23. Alert for those who are heading into the city to see the Christmas decorations or shows on Friday nights in November and December: those dates haven’t been announced yet.

Metro North schedules will be slightly adjusted during those nights, and riders will be given advance notice. Construction will be suspended when trains pass through the area.

This week and next bring lane closures (see chart below) and a detour:

Note: access to the Thruway southbound will be via Route 59 in Nyack next Friday (October 23) from 10 p.m. until 5 a.m. Saturday while the Exit 10 on-ramp is temporarily closed due to AETC installation.

I’d like to know what you think.
