Governor proposes holding Thruway tolls flat until at least 2020 for all users; cutting tolls in half for 1 million frequent travelers of the Thruway; and eliminating tolls for agriculture vehicles

Today in Syracuse Governor Cuomo unveiled the fifth signature proposal of his 2016 agenda: the largest investment in transportation infrastructure in Upstate New York – including a plan to keep Thruway tolls flat until at least 2020 and cutting tolls in half for those who rely on the Thruway the most.

“We are going to reduce tolls for businesses and drivers who rely on it the most, eliminate them for farmers bringing their goods to market, and freeze tolls for everyone else until at least 2020,” Cuomo said. The three-part plan will:

  1. Cut tolls in half for state residents and businesses who utilize the Thruway most often.
  2. Eliminate tolls via a 100 percent credit for vehicles owned by farmers who use E-ZPass® to bring farm goods to market.
  3. Thanks to the state’s $700 million investment in Thruway infrastructure — in addition to last year’s commitment of $1.285 billionthere will be no toll increases until at least 2020.

This would apply to tolls for the new bridge, which opens in 2018.

I’d like to know what you think.
