Pretty night photo of why three lanes on the Thruway and bridge closed to traffic last weekend. Another happens Tuesday, May 10, when one southbound lane near the former toll plaza closes from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

More than halfway to their 419-foot height, the towers nearly reach the bridge.

Everything looked dark and foreboding against yesterday’s dark skies. I was past the plaza, where one-way toll collection was adopted August 12, 1970, and when booths on northbound lanes were removed.

Southbound traffic wasn’t as dense yesterday although cars began braking just past the main span, anticipating the plaza. There was also less zigzagging across lanes after driving through the partitions.

I’d like to know what you think.
