Intelligent Observations from the Passenger Seat

“They’re crooked,” she said, motioning as we got closer to the towers nearing their eventual 419-foot heights.

“This one bends one way,” she gestured with her arm, “and the other bends another way. Will they be straightened?” “They’re designed to angle out,” I said.

Each trip across the bridge is new to mom no matter how many times we drive those three miles, which is often since she’s fascinated by the project.

On the way home we got a glimpse of the super crane in action; her attention was focused on the uncovered piers.

“Are they going to stay like that?” “The blue steel goes on top of them, and then comes the road. This time next year we’ll be driving to Rockland on one span of that bridge.” I pointed.

“What are they going to do about this one? Where will they put it?”

Yesterday’s press release said a new drainage system is being installed under the west/northbound lanes during the next four weeks. It’ll take about one month, during which time up to three lanes from Elmsford to the bridge will be closed overnight. East/southbound lanes aren’t affected. Detailed info about it and lane closures are here.

“What’s this going to be?” she asked as we drove past the area where the new welcome center and maintenance facility will open. “Remember when they closed the access ramp from Broadway? They’ll have visitor information, and this is where the path along the bridge will start.”

We talked about it on the way home.

Mom, I love you to bits! Dad would have loved driving across, too, to see the bridge project and would have asked the same questions. Stay curious.

I’d like to know what you think.
