Seeing one of the Tower Cranes in Action

My cell phone rang while I was in Tarrytown on assignment. I fumbled with the zipper of my jacket pocket and answered. “Check out the Tower Crane Challenge at the Outreach Center,” the voice told me.

I love a mystery — think of Secret Agent Maxwell Smart answering his shoe — and had been reading the project’s tweets. Intrigued, I went later that day; here’s what happened next.

While I was pointing and clicking yesterday one of the project officials said turn around: a tower crane was lowering part of a blue jump form that had been removed from one of the chamfered tops.

So transfixed was I on the views that I hadn’t noticed one of the cranes was readying to remove it. Yesterday I thought of that game and the coordination and skill involved with lowering the figure onto a specific area below.

Here, a close-up of the crane’s cab. Notice the safety catwalk between the towers, connecting them for easy access.
