Progress since First Span opened last August

At the top of the photo, you can see cuts in the Tappan Zee Bridge; here’s why.

Did you hear it? The whoosh of time going by: January marked five years since the Thruway Authority issued Tappan Zee Constructors, LLC (TZC) Notice To Proceed.

The westbound span’s been open nearly six months, and the maintenance facility and new police barracks are under way. Crews are dismantling the Tappan Zee Bridge, which looks tiny next to its replacement. Mom and I rode across the bridge last February, when more than half the stay cables were in place. She’d asked what the towers and blue girders were and if we were going to drive on it.

Yes, we will, mom. When you come home, I’ll take you in the car and drive across the new bridge to Memorial Park to eat ice cream and gaze at the river view.

New state police barracks will be ready for move-in day when bridge opens this year/NYSTA

Meantime, crews are working on the maintenance facility that you pass on the right driving westbound, and the new state trooper barracks just before Exit 9 and to the far right of the Tappan Zee Bridge.

I’d like to know what you think.
